Arpley Landfill Capping
The works were undertaken At Arpley Landfill site located in Warrington. The works comprised the installation of 118,500m2 of 1mm LLDPE and HDPE (25,000m2 LLDPE and 93,000m2 HDPE). The site was an historic disposal location for the Manchester ship canal dredgings. The silts and dredgings are now utilised as the restoration soils on the site. This in itself poses many challenges due to their high moisture content and silty nature. The 100,000m3 of soils were required to be hauled circa 2km from point of excavation to capping location, which results in several haul roads having to be constructed and managed throughout the project.
The site is located in close proximity to several housing estates so it was of paramount importance to the client that DXI liaised with the leachate and Gas teams to ensure minimal infrastructure was removed during the capping this involved working next to live gas and leachate infrastructure on a daily basis.
The capping system comprises:-
• 300mm thick regulating layer (site won dredgings).
• 1mm LLDPE and HDPE double textured welded geomembrane cap.
• The geomembrane cap is overlain by 1200mm thickness of restoration soils.
